Palestinian Rights Group Alleges Israeli Plot to Assassinate Jailed Leader Barghouti

A Palestinian rights group has issued a warning alleging that Israel is plotting to assassinate jailed Palestinian leader Barghouti. The warning comes amid ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of Palestinian prisoners. The group did not provide further details but emphasized the seriousness of the threat.

BETHLEHEM, WEST BANK – DECEMBER 24: A Palestinian man pass the graffiti showing Marwan Barghouti, a Palestinian imprisoned politician on December 24, 2023 in Bethlehem, West Bank. Last month, Christian Palestinian leaders here called off public Christmas celebrations, citing the effects of the ongoing war in Gaza. Regarded by Christians as the birthplace of Jesus, Bethlehem is usually bustling with foreign tourists this time of year, with streets full of holiday decoration and vendors selling ornaments and festive figurines. Israel’s war against Hamas that was sparked by the Oct. 7 attacks has also made life more volatile in the West Bank. Israeli forces here have stepped up raids on alleged militants, police have clashed with protesters, and there has been a rise in violent attacks on Palestinians by Israeli settlers. A Palestinian rights group has warned that Israel is plotting to assassinate jailed Palestinian leader Barghouti. The group issued its warning through a statement, highlighting what it described as a dangerous escalation targeting Palestinian figures imprisoned by Israel.

According to the rights group, the alleged plot is part of deliberate measures taken by Israel against Palestinian prisoners. The warning comes amid heightened tension and ongoing reports of violations inside Israeli detention centers, focusing on what the group claims is a systematic campaign to isolate and silence Palestinian resistance leaders.

The rights group emphasized the critical condition of Barghouti, who remains jailed under Israeli custody. From its side, the group called on local, regional, and international actors to take immediate steps to prevent what it termed an imminent threat. The group did not release names of alleged Israeli officials or agencies involved, but held Israel fully responsible for any harm that may befall Barghouti.

Meanwhile, the group reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of all Palestinian prisoners, particularly those held under conditions it described as repressive and in violation of international norms. It added that the targeting of imprisoned resistance leaders, including Barghouti, constitutes a grave breach of human rights and reveals what it believes is a systematic attempt by Israel to weaken the Palestinian resistance movement from within.

In addition, the group reiterated that Barghouti’s imprisonment has long symbolized the broader Palestinian struggle. His continued detention, coupled with warnings of assassination plots, reflects what the group labelled as punitive policies against those who symbolize national steadfastness.

From its side, the rights group demanded urgent international intervention to ensure the safety of Barghouti and all Palestinian prisoners. According to the statement, silence from international institutions would amount to complicity in Israel’s alleged policies. It further emphasized the detainees’ resilience and their enduring role in confronting occupation through steadfastness and sacrifice.

The warning concluded with a call to Palestinian communities and civil organizations to intensify efforts in exposing the potential threat and to mobilize support for all prisoners facing similar danger. The group maintained that any attempt on Barghouti’s life would represent a direct assault on the Palestinian narrative and resistance identity.

The group’s statement stood without additional evidence or corroborative details. No immediate response from Israeli authorities was mentioned. The rights group affirmed its intention to continue monitoring developments closely and to report any further threats to the safety of Palestinian detainees.
